Has anyone else noticed how the prices have risen astronomically for Addy's retired things lately? Gee Whiz, just in the past month her Sweet Potato set went from $50-60 to a recent auction of over $150! What's up with that? And it is not just that set, but her others as well. Her winter fun items are going for outrageous prices. If there is anyone out there that would like to give me a chance to buy her winter fun set for a decent price - PLEASE let me know. I've been trying to get one on Ebay for the longest and keep getting outbidded. It is the last thing I need to complete her collection. Just a suspicion, but I think there may be some famous folks (Hollywood anyone?) out there surfing Ebay rounding up all these goodies, LOL. Any thoughts from you guys on what's up? Also, does anyone know why AG changed the illustrations for Addy's book character in her stories? I really like Melodye Rosales pictures best - it is a shame AG changed them.

I haven't been ebay surfing much because of the code but had planned to start looking for Addy and Kirsten in April. DH gave me Kirsten and I gave my sister Addy for Christmas. We don't have much for either of them. I was hoping to find some decent prices .

I have noticed the trend too! Strange. But, I think each doll's accessory price increase comes in spurts. If another seller sees something going for an outrageous amount...then they will more than likely list one too. I know I would list one if I had one. LOL

Perhaps it's because American Girl got a lot of new fans when the Samantha movie came out. We all found that out when all the current catalog offerings went back-ordered. Now that a couple months have gone by, there has been enough time for the new people to learn about Pleasant Company and it's history, including retired items. Just a guess.

If you look, there are certain buyers who continually bid on the same things and thereby drive the price up. I wish I had an extra winter set to give you. I have a complete winter set, but I got it by purchasing each item separately. I do think they are worth getting. Keep looking and you might be able to find the parts separately for a reasonable price. For Addy's Sweet Potato set, I purchased a mini cast iron pan on ebay that is exactly the same as Addy's and a piece of pottery that looks very similiar. I had already gotten the recipe from AG. My Sweet Potato set isn't all authentic AG, but our Addy can't tell and neither can my daughter. Good luck on your search.

Marytam,
I absolutely adore Addy, myself. I think she is the sweetest natued and most thoughtful of all the girls. I vote with Kim - and here are a couple of tips:
Look under griswald for your pan. They have made cast iron pans - perhaps since Addy's time. They made little frying pans as ash trays and they are the same size. Most but not all have the cigarette holder dent.
I have a collection of antique yelloware bowls in child sizes that my father used to enjoy picking up for me. There is a great variety, and this is the name for that type of pottery. You will find little pie pans, and I even have a bowl with a slot for seperating eggs.
Both the above can get pricey - be patient. both are still produced. I bought a different type bowl from Tuesday Morning that is rust colored all over and mroe fre form - looks more like what Addy might have had. I don't know that they had yelloware. My dad had a special interest in Civil War period pottery, and even discovered a now famous slave potter named Dave. He wsa literate, an eleoquant poet and about 8 feet tall. My sister used to climb into his pots to play hide and seek ( these same pots now sell for about 2500.00 each but what did we know) Growing up I saw a lot of pottery from crude voodoo jugs to manufactured vessels with a white glaze and blue numbers on them. Most household pottery had a grainy green glaze or else chocolate brown.
Think about other things you can make - most slaves did make whatever they needed themselves, and were ingenious about it. Some friends of my dh tried to get a Middle Passage museum established ( the plan has now been scraped) and their collection contained a vast variety of tool from brooms to pitchforks to shoes, that were all not only hand made without the use of tools ( or used only rudimentary tools) , but which did not follow the usual patterns of tradition. I suppose this is owing to the extreme isolation many slaves experienced (one way to keep a slave reliant on hs owner was to not give him anyone to communicate with from the outside world).
I am eagerly awaiting FrankenAddy - the hospital is making me a doll from scratch because I got a run of Addy's with bad hair. My understanding is they will take the best they have of each type of part and put together one that will have great coloring and great hair.

Thanks guys! You are all very sweet and Courtney Sunshine, your name truly fits you! I was sorta kinda venting that day and I really shouldn't complain because considering the fact that I am newer to AG (started collecting one year ago), I've been very lucky in the good buys I've been able to make (I'm a college senior and graduating this year, so money was often tight! LOL). I guess that had me spoiled! Your advice is good advice regarding buying parts separately. I've done that with Addy's stilting dress and stilts and with other things. I only have one AG doll, and that is Addy. I really like her because her face reminds me of my Mom. Funny how I just realized that this month (my mom died of breast cancer four years ago in March). Growing up I didn't really get to be affectionate with her like I would of liked (she suffered with mental illness throughout her adult life)but every time I hug Addy or see her little smile, it reminds me of when my mom was younger and happier. Don't know why I'm digressing, but I guess what I'm trying to say is simply this: the $$$ don't matter, it is the love and enjoyment AG brings that are priceless! Thanks for getting me off the soapbox! I appreciate it!

marytam I think that is one of the sweetest things I have heard in a long time. I think your Addy is a very special Addy and for her to mean so much to you is very touching. I am very sorry to hear about your Mom. I think from now on every time I take our Addy down, I will remember your reasons for loving your Addy and appreciate mine even more.
